🏆 AVIF — The New Champion
Built on the AV1 video codec, AVIF delivers the smallest files of the group while preserving remarkable detail — even in shadows and fine gradients. It supports HDR color, transparency, and animation, making it the most technically advanced format available today. The trade-off: encoding takes noticeably longer, and support in older Safari versions is limited.
Best for: hero images, photography-heavy pages, and anywhere shaving off kilobytes meaningfully improves load time.
⚖️ WebP — The Safe Middle Ground
Developed by Google, WebP strikes a strong balance between compression and compatibility. It's supported by essentially every modern browser, encodes quickly, and offers both transparency and animation — making it a practical default for most websites today.

In practice, many modern sites serve all three — AVIF first, WebP as a fallback, and JPG as the final fallback — using the HTML <picture> element so each browser automatically picks the best format it supports.
🧪 Putting It to the Test
Rather than just cite general figures, we ran our own experiment for this article. A 1920×1080 landscape photo (485 KB as a JPG) was resized to 1024×576 in GIMP, then exported at 60% quality across all three compressed formats:

At the same nominal quality setting, the three formats landed much closer together than the general figures at the top of this article suggest — and AVIF, despite producing the smallest file, showed slightly softer detail on close inspection. Two things likely explain this: the "60% quality" slider means something different to each codec's encoder, and this particular photo — smooth sky, water, and foliage gradients — has little of the fine, high-frequency detail where AVIF usually pulls furthest ahead. On a busier image (dense text, sharp architectural lines), the gap would likely widen back in AVIF's favor.
Takeaway: the format comparison tables above are solid general guidance, but always test with your own images — results shift depending on content type, encoder settings, and the tool you use to export.
